More Than This is more than you would think. Sorry, I just had to say that. But seriously though, picking this book up a few months ago, I would’ve never expected it to end how it did.

When you read the summary, you know straight off the bat? back? that Seth dies. And he literally dies in the first chapter. And not only is it a very vivid and detailed death, the why he dies is like my biggest fear so there was that.

But Seth wakes up in this death-like-limbo-hell. You’re just as confused as he is. You have every question he has. The book even ends with many questions not asked and I think that’s the point of it. It kind of makes you reassess your life.

The ambiguity is what this book required. You can’t have an answer or ‘closing all ties’ ending. It wouldn’t do it justice.

Throughout the book, Seth encounters two other people. The setting is in England, and one of them has broken English, and you can tell that he does because of the way that Ness wrote his dialogue. He didn’t overdo it though. It was a nice, even amount of broken English. Each character had a voice of their own. I knew who was speaking without the tag behind it. The book is just brilliant. It deserves more awards.

Patrick Ness continues to amaze me with all his works. I haven’t disliked a single one yet and I don’t think I will. I mention this book all the time because I want everyone to suffer the beauty that is A Monster Calls.

Please, do yourself a favor and read this book. Read all his books. Especially A Monster Calls.

More Than This Patrick Ness 9781406350487 Books Reviews

Wow! This book was a thriller, very suspenseful, and at times, agonizing to me as I worried endlessly about Seth, Tomascz and Regine. I couldn't put this book down and I was compelled to read it (this book kind of reminded me of the angst I felt with Grant's Gone Series and Dashner's Maze Runner) so you know what I am talking about right? The book begins with a very vivid description of Seth's death and proceeds to him waking up with no injuries...and alive. Where is he? In Hell, an afterlife of some sort? The reader is compelled to follow Seth as he tries to figure out where he is and what is going on. I also listed this book as horror because Seth finds himself in some burned out world that looks like the neighborhood where he grew up with layers of dust, no food, no people and closed up houses and businesses. When he meets Regine and Tomascz and also "The Driver" that is where the horror really settles in and what wild ride!!!
Ness' characters, his descriptions of the worlds Seth explores and his hope/hopeless worlds are food for thought, a great read!
This was a really interesting story with a lot of emotion. The story keeps you guessing throughout, and you worry about what will happen to the characters. There were some twists I never saw coming.
The whole world has gone to hell, an no one even knows it. This book was a real surprise. It seemed like a play in three parts...You are so surprised and sad at what is happening and then a switch and what is going on now? It takes a bit to understand and you spend time fumbling through, much like the characters do. Just when you think you have it, the denouement begins and you are just as confused as before. The end gives you an overwhelming sense of loss - or hope. It is left to your interpretation.
More Than This can be classified as one of those books that was so amazing and so thought-provoking that I don’t even know exactly how to review it. Here is my attempt.

'Here is the boy, drowning.'

The very first line and it is exactly how we start out, with our main character Seth as he drowns. But then in the next chapter he wakes up and discovers he is in the dusty and deserted house where he grew up in an English suburb before a tragedy rocked his family. This house is also across the world from where he died in the Pacific Northwest. And he is very much alone.

Seth immediately assumes this must be hell. I mean, he died, right? His dreams are filled with memories that get him lost in the moment, feeling so real and a breath away, like he is reliving them. Can that be part of hell too? He struggles to find the necessary tools of survival as he explores his surroundings, afraid of any hidden dangers that may spring out at him, and trust me, they do!

I honestly had no idea what to expect when I opened this book with a synopsis that was somewhat vague and of course the author took it beyond my wildest dreams. The book is split into four parts and each drastically changed the dynamic of the story, unraveling more layers and making my jaw drop and my head spin, in the best of ways of course. There is so much mystery and heart and then it becomes somewhat philosophical and wow, when I got to that point I realized just how incredibly amazing this story really was.

Of course it wouldn’t be Patrick Ness without a sense of adventure and action… and a character that once again reminded me of Michael Myers who just doesn’t die! (Remember Aaron from The Knife of Never Letting Go, anyone?) But above anything else, this book is about life. It’s about realizing your worth, to get as much out of life as you can. It’s about self-discovery, confidence and going out there and grabbing onto your dreams. It’s about discovering just what the title says, that there IS more than this.

I thank the author for writing a YA novel that isn’t just filled with excitement and intrigue, but also makes you appreciate life and what you can get out of it. It’s a story that stays with you and I’m so thankful to have read it.

“Haven’t you ever felt like there has to be more? Like there’s more out there somewhere, just beyond your grasp, and if you could only get to it?”

You should definitely go into this book without knowing anything about it, so I'm not going to say much.

It was good. The first 30% had me riveted and upset, I would've loved for that part to go on longer. The next 20% left me with what the character was feeling, like, "What? Are they really going there? Is the author really doing this..."

The remaining 50% was more like a movie, but with moments of confusion. What was real? Was any of it real?

Really good standalone YA book that actually makes you think. I would have loved to see what happened afterwards though. So frustrating! Even if that is the point.
