The Pier A Sophie Lee and Ellen Harper mystery edition by Rick Murcer Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Not bad but short read Miss manny in this though. Look forward to much mire books by murcer. Love his style!
Anyone who has read any of Rick Murcer's books already knows what they are going to get from any new book, but for those new to his writing, are in for a fantastic read. I hope they will take the time to go back and treat themselves to all of his previous works. K assure you that you won't be disappointed.
A good quick read and an addition to the series. Enjoyed it. Waiting for more, as I hear the next book is very close! Rick Murcer has become one of my favorite writers. his stories are easy to read, they reel you in and you are standing right there alongside his characters, becoming a part of the stories you read!
This was a great story but I was very disappointed it ended so quickly. Very good tie-in to Manny Williams. I thought I was reading a preliminary background story and wanted Sophie to return to Chicago or to have her ask Ellen and Brice to join her on her next case. I appreciated the lack of gore. Thank you, Rick Murcer! I always drop what I am reading when one of your books becomes available.
Sophie and her partner, Manny, are usually glued together at the hip. This time in this fast moving short story, Sophie and her new CPD friend have to solve the case themselves and quickly. If you haven't read any of the other Manny Williams books, I encourage you to start at the beginning and really begin to understand the dynamics that exist between Manny answer Sophie and how Sophie has gotten where she is professionally.
I have read everything Rick Murcer has written and find him to be one of my favorite authors. His specialty is the police procedural a la the CSI format, starring Manny Williams. He also shows remarkable skills in the short story genre. This story, in 47 pages (!), is remarkable. It has a beautiful opening sequence of events followed by a crime discovered and explored followed by a remarkable denouement. Many writers in full blown novels fail to be so effective!
The characters are recurring insofar as Sophie Lee is a regular member of the Williams' books and Harper was the star of a first novel in June, 2013. (By the way Rick, where is book two???).
For a short story the characters are remarkably well defined, the crime brutally described and the dialogue superb.
Read this story and then go and read everything else you can find by Rick Murcer. Enjoy!
Those of us who are dyed-in-the-wool Rick Murcer fans know Sophie Lee very well. She's outspoken, good at her job as a member of Manny Williams' BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit) team and a comic relief during the tough and often grisly situations in which the unit must function. She is most comfortable when Manny is around since he is the genius in profiling and always there to depend on for answers. This time, however, Sophie has to fly it on her own to conduct a profiling workshop in Chicago after Manny is called to work on another job in a different state. Sophie reluctantly says "yes" to doing what she has to do.
While at the workshop she meets Ellen Harper, Chicago Police Department's best CSI. The two women seem like old friends not long after meeting, and it's a good thing since Sophie and Ellen will need each other's help when a call comes in concerning an unpleasant crime scene that has just been discovered.
"The Pier" is a short mystery story written by Rick Murcer, author of the Manny Williams series of mysteries beginning with "Caribbean Moon." Caribbean Moon (Manny Williams Series Book 1) This short story had me hooked from page one until the very end, and like all of Murcer's books, the story has such good character development that I am always sorry to leave them when the end comes. As a new character for this story, Ellen Harper is very likeable and quite conscientous when it comes to her job. The author did an excellent job of comparing and contrasting Sophie Lee's and Ellen Harper's personalities and the methods they use to do their jobs.
It is a good thing that Ellen and Sophie have each other because their lives will depend on their combined knowledge when a very determined and angry killer has different plans for their futures.
Highly recommended reading for mystery and thriller readers!
