The uncle is involved in illegal activities - gaming machines and poker. Jamie helps the uncle with these and becomes quite good at poker both online and at the tables learning all the dirty tricks. His band of cohorts include the crooked judge who seems to hold the town hostage and is responsible for sentencing the teens' mother. Phoebe.When Jamie makes a bad decision ( the book is full of people making bad choices) her dreams of ever getting out of Blind River. seem to be squashed.

This is a page turner that cannot be put down. There are many twists and turns, and if you do not know much about poker, you will by the end. Curl up in the AC and take a trip to upstate NY - I actually shivered some times while reading - Ms Massey's works evoke the sense of failure, defeat, and lost souls

Gale Massey’s debut novel The Girl from Blind River from Crooked Lane Books is a dark page turner about Jamie Elders, a young woman trying to survive in a town where the doors to normal life have all been nailed shut long before she could even reach the knobs. Raised by a criminal uncle, beholden to a crooked judge, daughter of an ex-con, and sister to an unbalanced brother prone to unhinged violence, Massey’s strong protagonist must walk the dirty line between crime and freedom to see her dream of leaving town come true. Reminiscent of Daniel Woodrell’s Winter’s Bone, and written with crisp, but vivid prose, Massey’s words let the reader disappear into Jamie Elders’ small-town world and cheer when the girl finally finds her way out of Blind River.
A Girl From Blind River delivers of rich package of treats--suspense, a fresh coming of age story, and a good study of human character. Blind River is the story of Jamie Elder, a young woman whose uncle and guardian has give her little love or security. But he has given her a skill and a ticket to independence poker and the guts and poise to play the game with the toughest and most dishonest of men. Jamie makes bad choices and smart ones, succeeds and flounders, and figures out how to gain footing in a less than honorable world, though her future remains uncertain.
Although this is clearly Jamie's journey, Massey also gives the reader intriguing secondary characters. Jamie's mother, recently released from prison and the town judge are complex extremes, with stories worthy of a sequel.

In Massey's debut crime fiction novel, Jamie Elders is an eighteen-year-old girl desperate to put her rough life behind her. She can't seem to catch a break. Living in a ramshackle trailer with her abusive uncle and violent younger brother, she hopes she isn't destined to repeat the doomed lives of her relatives, her family's curse. She has a couple of things going for her, a card-sharks instinct for strategy in poker, and looks inherited from her mother, an ex-con who now works as a waitress in the local diner.

Jamie relies on her survival instinct to get out of increasingly harrowing situations after getting involved in her uncle's illegal betting operation. She makes the unwise decision to raid his cash takings to fund a new computer. The trouble is she is also crossing a corrupt town judge up for re-election who is in cahoots with her uncle and will stop at nothing to protect his reputation and illegally funded lifestyle.

The book is plot-driven building tension as Jamie gets drawn into increasingly dangerous activities. She finally draws the line and knows she has to leave town when she helps the judge and her uncle cover up a murder. The problem is she would be leaving her troubled brother vulnerable, the only person for which she has a genuine affection.

Readers may find that they are 100 pages in before they get into the story, but then they are hooked. Massey is adept at capturing the emotions and thought-processes of a girl living on the edge. The dialogue is convincing, and the pacing picks up after the first third of the book. Some of the situations described are raw and disturbing such as Jamie's liaisons with a lecherous older man. These parts are tough to read.

Readers with a knowledge of poker will understand what is going on during the critical scenes of the poker games. I am afraid that I didn't understand all the insider language. Fans of Gabriel Talent's My Absolute Darling, poker stories, and gritty crime fiction will probably enjoy this book.
