I've read Shielder and the second book in Catherine Spangler's series, Shadower (I read Shadower first). Not only am I appalled at the treatment of women in this "universe", I'm especially nauseated by the way Chase treats Nessa in Shielder. By the time I was halfway through with this book, I literally hated Chase. It took a lot of fortitude, on my part, to make myself finish reading this.I don't understand how or why Nessa has any feelings, whatsoever, for her people (the Shielders). *SPOILERS* When she returns to her mother and father at the end of the book, still hungry for their acceptance... that they RELUCTANTLY accept her even after she almost dies to save them all... I wanted to cry. These people (her family) abandoned her at the age of 12 because she has a seizure disorder. She was injured terribly as a result of her disorder, and so they throw her out of their home and lives. The entire village then continues to show their obvious disgust for this child by BRUTALLY STERILIZING HER because she's not fit to have Shielder children! Still, Nessa is desperate for her people's acceptance and dearly loves her big brother because he pays minor attention to her while she's in a poverty stricken exile (this supposedly makes him a "good guy")... but yet, he only touches her twice her entire life (she's now 22). He hugs her after she allows herself to be injected with a virus that is decimating her species, and he obviously believes she'll die. The second hug was after she almost dies from said virus, but ends up living and saving their worthless species.
To make matters worse, our "hero" from Shadower (which I halfway liked until I read this book) is also a Shielder and treats her abhorrently, again, because of her imperfections. I lost any joy in reading this series as I repeatedly read about how men verbally, mentally, and even physically manhandle this poor girl, or any woman actually. She's obviously been terribly abused, yet manages to save Chase's life, and patiently waits for Chase to fulfill a simple request to drop her off at a space port. He barely makes it on time, and only gets her there because her secret mission is revealed as she's at death's door.
Not only do I NOT recommend this book, I would not read the series, either. From reading the synopsis' about the other two books in the series, the women are all in precarious positions having to rely on poor excuses for men. I'll never read another book by this author.

Shielder A Science Fiction Romance Shielder series Book 1 edition by Catherine Spangler Romance eBooks Reviews
Before making the obvious statement, I'd like to start out with the experience I had while reading the book. When I bought the book for some reason I recognized the author's name but couldn't figure out why. I read to page 2 and knew the ending. This had me stumped because I NEVER read a book more than once because I always remember them. I did some research and found that this book was originally published in 1999 and around that time I had read some romance books (I usually read sci-fi). I had read the book before so now what do I do? I decided to continue reading to see what would happened if I read a book twice. By page 10 everything about the book had come back as if I had read it yesterday. I decided to continue reading, the story had me hooked. I found that knowing what was on the next page was more exciting than wondering what was on the next page. I enjoyed the book the first time but liked it better the second time. Now I have to reconsider my thoughts on re-reading books.
The story is unique so that gets you hooked. Next you find yourself becoming emotionally attached to the all the characters rather quickly. Then the plot starts to get more and more complex. Before you know it you have put your life on hold to finish the book. This is a well thought out story and the author is a good story teller. Not all good stories are presented by good story tellers. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series (which I know I have not read yet) and trying some of the author's other books.
This it's an extraordinary story of a young heroine defying the worst odds, while finding herself and what truly matters. This story is exceedingly well written, contains constant twists and turns while never losing track of it's points and main theme. It's a story of hope, trust against all odds, and learning about oneself. It contains a fascinating aspect of noting how much the choices me make affect our destiny and who we become, as adults. A great story to give young adults more insight into their own coming of age, including, that who we are is defined by what we choose to believe in, and do.
*On notation* is that, this story contains some sexually explicit content. The author does an admirable job presenting this content very tastefully and appropriately, as part of the normal growth from childhood into healthy, appropriate, mature, loving and mutually respectful sexual identity and representative of normal sexual relationships of adulthood. The amount of sexuality contained is not distracting from the overall theme of struggles stemming from growing out of childhood innocence into healthy maturity of a strong young woman learning to overcome self-doubt physical struggles and social isolation. This book is on my "re-read" list, for good reason.
Recommended for young adults and older teens wondering about who they are now, who they should be and who they could be.
The book sounding interesting so I picked it up to read and wish I hadn't read it. I had a number of issues with this book. First being the love interest was a major slime. He sleeps with her almost right away after rescuing her and then ignores her for days. The second thing that bothered me was Nessa was a major doormat. She takes any affection from the cast of characters and loves them for every little scrap they give. The final part of the book which caused the most frustrating was the epilogue. Nessa and her now husband head to her home and she is pretty much welcomed with open arms now that she nearly died for them and her husband had fixed her leg and stopped her seizures. Until the main character became perfect and saved the entire race she is not worthy of her families love and affection.
